What to do for fun in Baringo County

Baringo County lies in the Great Rift Valley, surrounded by Laikipia, Samburu, Turkana, Nakuru, West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties. These are also the major counties in the Great Rift Valley, which afford visitors unrivalled safaris.

Baringo County will not disappoint because it has two of the major lakes of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria are a short distance apart. When looking for things to do in Baringo County, consider the number of days you expect to spend here so you can schedule visits to adjacent attractions on the same day while sparing more time to the most thrilling of these places.

Game Viewing

Explore places like Lake Bogoria National Reserve to see zebras, impalas, gazelles, dikdiks, greater kudus and monkeys. Do not forget to add Ruko Conservancy to your list of places to visit. It has giraffes, hippos, impalas, baboons and birds. Kaptuya Conservancy has a number of wildlife species to see as well.

Bird Watching

Lake Baringo has over 460 species of birds. Lake Bogoria is another haven for birds including about half a million lesser flamingos.

Sight Seeing

Put Lake Bogoria on top of the list because it has dozens of geysers and hot springs. Undersurface hot water gushes out onto the lake creating magnificent geysers and hot springs. The volcanic cones are other great sights to see in the county.


Lake Baringo supplies the locals with fish. While staying at some of the camps around or on islands on the lake, fishing will be part of the itinerary.


It is the best way to explore the region on foot.  It is hot most time of the year, but when you hike in the early or late hours of the day, you can cover a large section of the county.

Pre-historic Tour

Kabarnet Museum is the best place to learn about prehistoric life. It has exhibits fossils of equipment used by communities in the county.
