Carry a Picnic Basket, a Bottle of Wine and Great Company
Every month, Nairobi hosts the Blankets and Wine Kenya festival. Muthoni Ndonga, the event’s founder, may not have foreseen such unrivalled presence in a city that never thought picnic blankets and wine would be an agreeable combination, but this event is now worth millions. Currently in its 53rd Edition (July 2014), this festival has grown in leaps and bounds. It is a much-awaited event that Nairobians have on the calendar to enjoy a picnic, live music and art all in one setting.
International musicians like Makifizolo, Liquideep, Zahara, Meklit Hadero and Mi Casa are some of the great musicians who have performed on this festival’s stage. Additionally, Kenya’s celebrated musicians such as Eric Wainaina, Amileena, Sauti Sol, Juliani, Harry Kimani and Suzzana Owiyo have performed on the same podium too.
Blankets and Wine Nairobi brings together music and art lovers from all races, tribes, colour and creed. It is a fashion fete of sorts too as attendees sashay into the field in sundresses, hemp hats, sun hats, sunglasses, African designs etc. Children too join in the fun and they have a special play area within the open field so that parents can sip wine and enjoy music on the other side.
The open field( this event is mostly held in Carnivore grounds Nairobi), has a layout that lets every reveler see what is happening on the main stage, and also gives access to other platforms such as the food stand, the Kwani Stage, Coffee Booth, the drinks corner etc. A lush green lawn offers a picnic arena in the middle where attendees unfold their picnic chairs, lay their picnic blankets and get the party going. All you need is a picnic basket with your bottle of wine and grab several of your friends so you can chat and have fun together.
