Uasin Gishu County is located in the Rift Valley, surrounded by Kericho, Nandi, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties. Uasin Gishu’s capital is Eldoret, which is the largest town as well and an economic hub. Eldoret International Airport is the region is the region’s pride, with flights to parts of the country and air cargo services.
Other major towns in this county are Moi’s Bridge, Burnt Forest and Turbo. The region is also known for its leaders, the likes of the present Deputy President, William Ruto.
The name Uasin Gishu comes from a Maasai word, iiwuansinkishu, who grazed their cattle in this area. This county largely depends on agriculture. It has expansive farms that were previously owned by settlers before the country’s liberation from British rule. This county produces maize in large scale, dairy products as well as horticultural produce.
Apart from agriculture, Uasin Gishu is famous for its athletes. Kenya ranks among the top five countries in athletics globally, and this recognition comes from the dozens of sports men and women, some of whom live in this county.
The Stars of Uasin Gishu
The largest number of athletes in the country comes from the North Rift, where Uasin Gishu is located. Veteran sportsman Kipchoge Keino, an Olympic Champion hails from this county. Other athletes past and present are Janet Jepkosgei, Wilson Kipketer, Wilfred Bungei, David Kibet, Edna Kiplagat, Sally Jepkosgei Kipyego and Eunice Jepkoech Sum.
Hotels in this county are mostly located in Eldoret Town and they include Sirikwa Hotel, Cicada Hotel, Wagon Wheel and Marriot Hotel.
