Sadili Oval Sports AcademyLang'ata
Sadili Oval offers facilities for a wide range of sports including football, basketball, tennis and swimming.
A Modern Sports Academy For all
Located next to the sprawling Kibera slum in Lang’ata, Sadili Oval is a not for profit sports centre that reaches out to the community. Youth in the slum around the facility are exposed to social evils such as drug abuse, alcoholism and organised crime. For that reason, a group of people decided to set up a facility that would offer a safety net for such young people who needed a place to escape the streets and utilize their energy and talents wisely. That was in 1992.
Now, this sports centre is one of the largest in East Africa. It is not only a place for young people in the locality; it welcomes people of all ages from the whole city and beyond. This facility is also the training centre for the country’s elite team 7s rugby players and a talent search academy for young sportsmen and women.
This facility has affordable sports coaching. Sports played here include tennis, swimming, football, rugby and basketball. Aerobics sessions take place in a fully carpeted studio with a raised wooden floor and music plays in the background. The aerobics sessions take place both indoors outdoors. Tennis players who have walked through the gates of this facility have proceeded to regional tournaments and into universities in the US through college scholarships.
Sadili Oval relies on well-wishers to finance its activities. Additionally, it runs an accommodation facility, Gona Suites, of 40 self-contained rooms on bed and breakfast terms. Organisations and groups host events and workshops here. The sports facility has an in-house shop too that sells sports equipment. Students in the facility’s talent program can stay at Gona Suites or in the hostels of Malezi School, which is linked to the sports centre.
