The Beauty of the Great Gorge
The Great Rift Valley stretches from Lake Turkana in the north to the Maasai Mara down south. Nakuru is one of the major destinations within this gorge. It is a cosmopolitan town, with people from all major communities in the country. It has one of the highest population densities in the country, coming fourth after Nairobi, Kakamega and Kiambu. It is the headquarters of a county with the same name.

Attractions in Nakuru County
The first stop for many visitors is Lake Naivasha. It is a freshwater lake, with one of the most beautiful views of other attractions in the region. This lake was a landing zone for aircrafts in pre-independent Kenya. Now, it is a splendid attraction with hippos, hundreds of birds, plants and trees.
Lake Nakuru is another must visit attraction. Flamingoes cover its rim turning it into a magnificent pink lake. This lake is within Lake Nakuru National Park. Animals to see here include lions, black rhinos, giraffes, waterbucks, buffalos, warthogs and hundreds of bird species.
Tour the Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site, which dates back to the Neolithic and Iron Age. The fossils were discovered in 1926, and it is a great place to learn about early man. The excavations brought forth pottery and coins from burial pits dating back hundreds of years ago.
Sights to see include Menengai Crater, which is a dormant volcano. From this stunning attraction, you can see Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria. Find out whether this place actually lives up to the myth that it is a place of devils or ‘kirima kia ngoma’.
Lake Elementaita is another key attraction. This soda lake is home to flamingoes and other species such as elands, zebras and gazelles roam its perimeter. You can also visit Kariandusi Prehistoric Site, which is close to this lake. Fossils found in this archeological site include hand axes and glass knives.
