Moi International Airport Mombasa links tourists, business travellers and other passengers to the coastal part of the country. It is one of the three international airports in the country. Situated in Port Reitz, at the coast, it is over 400km by air from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi. This aviation facility is second to JKIA in size and traffic levels.
Airlines operating in this facility are Air Uganda, Condor, Ethiopian Airlines, Edelweiss Air, Jetairfly, Fly540, Kenya Airways, Finnair, Mombasa Air Safari, Neos, RwandAir, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines etc. There are flights to African destinations such as Arusha, Addis Ababa, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Entebbe and Kigali. Domestic flights include Mombasa to Lamu, Malindi, Amboseli National Part and Maasai Mara. Therefore, a holiday at the coast can be combined with a safari in the rolling plains of Maasai Mara or the elephant rich plains of Amboseli. This airport also connects Kenya to Doha, Frankfurt, Zurich, London and Istanbul. Overall, there are flights to over 20 countries.
The Kenya Airports Authority oversees operations of this airport. This facility has two runways. One runway has Instrument Landing System (ILS) to enhance a smooth landing by offering signals to aircrafts.
Army engineers from South Africa built Moi International Airport Mombasa during World War 2. It was called the Port Reitz Airport, and it served the British army as well as the South African army. In 1979, it rose to international airport standards, and it is now one of the leading facilities in the region.
