On a tiny Indian Ocean island called Lamu is a town going by the same name – Lamu. The town serves as the administrative centre of Lamu district.  As Kenya’s oldest living town of original Swahili settlements along the coast of East Africa, the historic Lamu town is one of the hidden gems Kenya has.

The Lamu Museum

The Sultan of Pate’s Lamu Fort

Within the early 1500s, the Sultan of Pate’s constructed the Fort. The Sultan aimed to protect Lamu which wash then a key trading waterfront town. At the Fort, you will encounter environmental and historical artefacts. The Fort also houses Lamu’s library.

The Mnarani Mosque

Take your time to view the artistic ancient inscriptions that embellish the mosque.

The Riyadha Mosque

The Riyadha Mosque is the centre for the pilgrim Maulidi Festival, and the donkey sanctuary.

Lamu Island is packed with several intimate restaurants and coffee shops along the narrow roads and streets. These establishments will serve you delicious exotic treats as you take in the exquisite, unique view and scenery.  As you stroll along the streets you are enveloped with a fusion of aromas from different shops with mixtures of cuisine.  Due to the strong cultural background of the town, clubs and pubs may not be a regular feature on street corners.
